300 rally at City Hall,
march on Port of Oakland

Port drivers, community demand clean air
and right to organize

Secretary-Treasurer Chuck Mack addresses the assembled crowd at the Port of Oakland’Äôs
Jack London Square offices.

More than 300 truck drivers, West Oakland residents, and labor/community activists marched from Oakland City Hall to Port headquarters on March 17 to demand that the Port create a new model for trucking services; one that would improve air quality and offer workers the opportunity to join a union.

A delegation from the drivers, ACORN, and the Alameda County Labor Council delivered a letter of support to Mayor Ron Dellums' office as the march began, urging that he continue to call on the Port to adopt a policy that recognizes the drivers' right to organize and the community's right to clean air.

Drivers Waldo and Antonio (last names withheld to protect their jobs) delivered petitions signed by more than 1,200 drivers and 500 residents in support of the plan. Linnie Cobb, a member of both ACORN and SEIU 6434, called for the Port to act responsibly toward workers and residents. One in five West Oakland children have asthma, caused by increased diesel emissions. The Coalition's plan would require trucking companies to carry the full cost of their operations, instead of transferring engine replacement costs to taxpayers.

Manuel, a twentyyear veteran driver, spoke about the impossibility of earning a living wage while paying off a truck loan and being dependent on a broker for daily work.

The Port of Los Angeles approved the Coalition for Clean and Safe Ports plan this week. Oakland Commissioners voted on March 18 to study impacts before moving ahead with a similar model. Port Commissioners Victor Uno (IBEW 595) and Margaret Gordon (West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project) accepted the demand letter from marchers in front of the Port offices and pledged to fight for justice.

Waste Management workers honored

Locked-out workers from Locals 1546, 70 and 6 show off their hard-earned picketing skills

At one of the Bay Area's largest labor events -- the Alameda County Central Labor Council's Political Action Dinner -- the members of Local 70, IAM Local 1546, and ILWU Local 6, were saluted as the "Heroes of Waste Management." The event was held April 3 at the Oakland Marriott.

During dinner, dozens of elected officials in attendance were recognized. When the time came for the program, Pastor Ricky Jenkins, from the Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice, opened with an unusual invocation. He started, traditionally by blessing unions and their staffs and officers in their efforts to better the lives of Alameda County's working people. But when he closed his prayer with the words "People, tell the story.... Tell the whole wide world, this is union territory," he called forth a large group of shouting workers to the stage -- those who had been locked-out or supported their fellow unionists at Waste Management in the summer of 2007.

Workers from the three impacted unions had an opportunity to tell the story of the lock-out and the solidarity it generated -- not only among the 500 Teamster drivers who were locked out, but also among the 82 IAM techs and 300 ILWU recyclers and clerical workers who weren't officially locked-out but refused to cross the picket line.

Also honored that evening as Unionist of the Year, was IAM Area Director Don Crosatto. In addition to playing a key role in his union's negotiations with Waste Management during the lockout, the Council recognized Don for his work promoting solidarity and coordinating between the unions, for his outreach to community allies and for his effective media communications throughout the protracted battle.
